What drives you

We believe that the critical challenges society faces, including climate change, global migration, and access to education, require bold leaders from all sectors to come together, take initiative, and create lasting solutions. The LEAD Summer School brings such leaders together and equips them with cutting edge skills in applied leadership.

During this experience, participants will become agents of change in their organization as well as learn to empower and inspire others. They become part of a network of international leaders allowing for cross-fertilization, co-learning, and peer-coaching beyond the duration of the LEAD Summer School.

Who you are

The LEAD Summer School is an ideal fit if you:

  • are in a leadership position in a business, educational, governmental or civil society organization,
  • have a minimum of 2 years professional experience,
  • have the passion to drive change, inspire and empower others, and have impact beyond your own organization.

What the program looks like

The LEAD Summer School will start with a networking conference on Monday July 24, 2017. On the subsequent days, four workshops will be offered in parallel. Each day will cover one of the four tracks LEAD has identified as being crucial for successful leadership in the digital age:

Even before meeting in Berlin for the LEAD Summer School, participants will get to know each other on this obligatory online course in June. You will not only start networking but will also be introduced to the leadership understanding that LEAD believes is needed for the challenges of our time.

Leading in the Digital Age

The trends of the digital age make our organizations and their work more complex: With social media every move is public. Disruptive technologies fundamentally alter the playing fields of any organization. Stakeholders – both internal and external – have become empowered and want to have a say in decisions. Global interconnectedness makes the world ever more volatile and unpredictable. How can leaders achieve impact, drive change and foster innovations in this crazy world? To answer this question, we will explore the challenges that the digital age poses and we then move to identifying ways to empower ourselves as leaders.
This course is an online course over 5 weeks (2-4 hours each week on course videos, assignments and interacting with your teammates) held on the NovoEd platform developed at Stanford, run jointly by LEAD and Leaderosity / The Presidio Institue, San Francisco.

Tobias Leipprand is CEO and founder of LEAD. He has built two social startups in Berlin – stiftung neue verantwortung and LEAD. Teaching and researching on leadership have been an essential part of his work, and he has gained valuable insights from practicing leadership himself. As a yoga teacher and practitioner he starts to learn how to stay balanced in turbulent times. 

Oliver Triebel is CEO of LEAD Mindsets & Capabilities. Prior to his position at LEAD, he spent 17 years at management consultants McKinsey & Company in Berlin and Dubai. As an Expert Partner and co-leader of McKinsey's organization and HR practice, he created the Mindsets & Capabilities Practice in Germany and McKinsey's Center for Leadership in the Middle East. In between his McKinsey years, he held a line management role as Vice President Corporate Management Development at Bertelsmann. Today, in addition to his role at LEAD, he is also an Adjunct Professor of Practice at the Central European University's School of Public Policy in Budapest.

On the 24th of July, participants will meet face to face for the first time: The LEAD Summer School kick-off conference in the heart of Berlin will encourage you to get to know each other by engaging in cross-sectoral dialogue. Set your milestones for your personal growth and exchange experiences and visions for a leadership that goes beyond mere management.

On the 25th of July, we will start with the trainings. You will choose one of these four trainings in the field of "communication & advocacy skills" for day 2.

2.1 Talk like TED

According to TED-Curator Chris Anderson „presentation literacy“ is a „core skill for the 21st century“. The US-American innovation conference TED, founded in 1984, stands for interdisciplinary, idea-centered talks. Leading thinkers, doers and artists present their „ideas worth spreading“ in a maximum of 18 minutes in front of a live audience while being recorded, too. Over the years, TED Talks have become the symbol of „best in class“ effective public speaking,  personal, entertaining and inspiring. In this workshop we will uncover the secrets of TED Talks, great storytelling and a strong stage presence. Because we believe everyone with an idea can learn to present persuasively and powerfully.

Christopher Kabakis is a communications consultant and business & speaker coach. Founder of the Infinity Institute, he coaches speakers for Germany’s largest TEDx events and conducts public speaking and storytelling trainings for corporations, universities and startups. He is a guest lecturer for Master Programs at ECSP Europe and known for his moussaka based on his Greek Godmother’s secret recipe.

2.2 Key Principles of Advocacy

This course will introduce participants to the key concepts of successful public-interest advocacy. We will discuss why some great ideas never materialise, while others set the agenda, shape the public debate, and ultimately determine changes in policy-making, law, and society. Participants will learn theories of advocacy and learn through role-plays and case studies.

Dr. Julia Stamm is founder and director of Science Leads (www.science-leads.com). She spent her career in international research management and science policy making (e.g. European Commission, COST - European Cooperation in Science and Technology). Julia holds a PhD in sociology and an Executive Master of Public Management. She studied in Berlin, Frankfurt/Oder, Lille and Strasbourg.

2.3 Strategic Public Relations

Strategic public relations is crucial for the success of most organizations, whether it is foundations, associations or NGOs. Afterall, success is strongly connected to the way in which results, recommendations and campaigns reach the right audience. Participants will learn how to attract attention and inspire others to take action by communicating strategically via the right channels.

Markus Wieser is stakeholder engagement champion at GORE-TEX where he manages the global communication with NGOs, politics and other stakeholders. Before that, he was a consultant at CNC Communications in Munich, Berlin and London, supporting organizations mainly in corporate communications and public affairs. Markus studied communication science, psychology, politics and business management in Munich.

2.4 Good Influence: The Power of Behavioral Science

Whether you recognize it or not, every day, all around us, our behavior is being influenced by someone or something, be it the words of a colleague, the design of a space or the music in a store. Sometimes the stakes are small and other times these “nudges” (Thaler & Sunstein, 2008) can be game-changing, both professionally and personally. This is an evidence-based, interactive workshop through stories, case studies and replicable frameworks helping participants learn how they can apply more effective, and influential communications.

Lisa Witter is an award-winning executive, serial entrepreneur, writer and public speaker. She is an expert in the intersections of communications and behavior change. She has counseled CEOs, Nobel Peace Prize winners and politicians. She is co-founder and Executive Chairman of Apolitical - the first global impact network for public servants. In 2010, she was honored as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and serves on WEF's Global Agenda Council for Behavior.

You will choose one of these four trainings in the field of "reflective skills" for day 3.

3.1 Mindful Self-Management

Leaders today find themselves in a conundrum more and more: How can they make consistent and sustainable decisions in a world marked by uncertainty and rapid change? They often perform in spaces of tension, under emotional strain, stress and conflict. Neuroscience and the wisdom traditions of the East both indicate that mindfulness not only reduces stress and anxiety, but enables people to find creative solutions within spaces of tension. In this workshop participants learn mindfulness practices that can be applied in both daily and professional situations. They will learn to notice bodily, emotional and intellectual responses and habits. This inner feedback will enable them to develop positive solutions even in situations of tension and uncertainty

Bernd Bender is a Zen teacher and founder of “Akazienzendo“ where he teaches mindfulness and meditation in the center of Berlin. He received his training in one of the most important Zen centers of the US, the San Francisco Zen Center, where he lived and studied for 15 years. He studied literature and philosophy in Frankfurt and Berkeley.

3.2 Stage Presence

Giving impulses to finding your own potential concerning your stage presence is the goal in this workshop. We will work with your voice, moves and imagination under the use of strong opera characters. That means fun and insights about your own growing possibilities on a stage.

Jasmin Solfaghari is a German - Iranian freelance opera director, author and coach located in Berlin. After several leading positions in German opera houses and her professorship at "Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig" she now wrote her first book for opera beginners (Opernführer für Einsteiger/Schott Verlag). Her international masterclasses for singers and lectures led her to universities in Italy, Israel, Brasil and USA.

3.3 Leading in a Self-conscious Way

When we work with others and ourselves, we discover complex and opposing interests. The Voice Dialogue approach helps discover these different voices and interests in yourself. It deals with complexity in life and psyche. Since life and business become more demanding, it is time to enhance our capacity to lead ourselves consciously in order to lead others properly. In this workshop, we explore and reflect the possibilities and limitations in our personality in both a theoretical and practical way.

Andrea Naurath has been coaching and training leaders and managers from various industries since 1998. She teaches in graduate programs at Management University in Karlsruhe. As a former actress she has deep experience in being self-conscious and reflecting inner processes in a creative field. She is licensed as a non-medical practitioner in psychotherapy, which allows her to work as a therapist in Germany. She lives and works in Berlin.

3.4 Immunity to Change

This workshop is a participant-driven exploration of people’s resistance to change. You will analyze a professional development goal of your own that you have struggled to make progress on and you will work on real-life cases from the energy, automotive and education sectors of groups resistance to change. We will develop actions plans and generate options for coaching and consulting to overcome these resistances.

Elisabeth Heid is Director of the Berlin Office of KONU (www.konu.org), a leadership development and consulting firm that helps people and organizations develop more bandwidth for complexity. She has over 10 years of experience driving change, most recently as Director for School Turnaround for Berlin schools and as a co-founder and managing director of Teach First Deutschland. Elisabeth holds an MA Public Administration from Harvard University.

Judit Teichert is an Affiliate Consultant at KONU. Judit holds a Diploma in Psychology and is a certified cognitive behavioral psychotherapist. She has over ten years of experience supporting individuals and groups to achieve sustainable changes. Judit also trains future psychotherapists in interaction and conversational skills.

Finally, you will choose one of these four trainings in the field of "strategic skills" for day 4.

4.1 Leading Change

Trying to manage change, organizations often get lost in tools. In contrast, the “leading change” approach creates trust in the change process as a basis for sustainable change. Therefore, it is useful to make the involved parties co-authors of the change at hand. In this workshop, participants will get a tangible introduction to “leading change”.

Dr. Markus Baumanns is CEO of the company companions. He has been engaged with management throughout his career, in particular in non-profit enterprises worldwide (e.g., as Press Secretary to the German Government, as diplomat in South America, or on the Board of foundations). He holds a PhD in history and studied in Cologne, Oxford and Vienna.

4.2 Digital Leadership - New Tools, new Values?

Everyone is talking about the Digital Transformation. But what about digital leadership? How is the digital world changing the roles of leaders? Are there new mindsets and new skillsets needed? In this workshop, we will talk about hybrid leadership (digital and analog), and how to deal with technology on a cultural level. Together, we will experience new skills and tools for the emerging digital VUCA world and its leaders.

Büsra Qadir is a digital marketing expert and startup founder of NINDYAA. She has several years of experience at Facebook and Twitter where she supported various companies and brands with their digital marketing strategies.

Martin A. Ciesielski is CEO of medienMOSAIK®. He has been working as a trainer and consultant for 16 years in the digital and art world. Before that, he had different positions in startups and financial institutions in Berlin und San Francisco. 

4.3 Strength-oriented Leadership

This workshop demonstrates and applies solution-focused and strengths-based tools to leadership topics and team development. Solution-focused tools enable you to find solutions without an analysis of root causes or problems. They are effective and save time (e.g. for problem analyses) and costs (e.g. consulting days needed for problem phase), and they uplift interpersonal communication processes by letting go of deficit, weakness and problem talks. A strength-based leadership approach empowers employees instead of controling them. For the successful transfer into your own practice, we will work with your questions and cases during the workshop and provide a toolbox with solution-focused techniques.

Felix Rübcke has 10 years of cross-cultural and international consulting experience for organizations in the private, public and civil society sector. He focuses on systemic organization development, organizational change, decision and innovation processes, leadership and team development. His methodology is solution-focused and strengths-based.

4.4 Agile Talent Management

Digital is coming fast and hits us like a tsunami of change. No industry sector is immune to disruption. It is therefore becoming increasingly important that employees not only are effectively involved, challenged and encouraged but also feel comfortable at work. We achieve this by creating a safe space in which people can actually contribute free of the anxieties of failure. Self steering, agile ways of working and cooperating are quickly becoming the new normal and are increasingly important success factors in the digital age. Together, we will discover what they are and how to implement them in your organization.

Filip Moriau is founder and CEO of STRAGILON, an international cosulting firm for strategy, innovation und agility. Filip has been in various HR, legal & Corporate Development roles in international businesses. He is a lecturer in Innovation within two international MBA programs and speaks regularly on international conferences about innovation, agility and the future of talent.  

You will choose one of these four trainings in "Multi-stakeholder skills" for day 5.

5.1 Negotiating Win-Win When They Want You to Lose

We have probably all heard of the Win-Win “Harvard Concept” of negotiation, but how do we make it happen in the real world? This workshop will teach the psychology of negotiations, give practical advice on how to craft a deal that provides benefits for all parties, offer tools for strategic preparation and critical debrief. You will learn how to separate relationship from content, how to understand the interests of the other side and how to persuade most effectively. We will also consider all this in situations of inferior power, when dealing with difficult partners. The workshop is very practical, highly interactive and offers personal feedback. Repeated games and role-plays will alternate with substantive input. The goal is to learn to love the lightness of negotiation while always assuring optimal results.

Dr. Mark Young is an independent consultant, trainer, writer and lecturer in the field of mediation and negotiation skills training and analysis; his company, Rational Games, Inc, (www.rationalgames.com) serves a variety of clients in the public and private sectors in the US, UK and Germany.  Mark’s business career has afforded him ample opportunities to do so, as he has served as a corporate lending officer at Chase Manhattan Bank, a strategic consultant at McKinsey & Company, a partner at Price Waterhouse Corporate Finance and a trade negotiator in the US Department of Commerce.

5.2 Authentic Leadership

To lead others, you need to be able to answer this question: Why should other people follow you? Your answer can then be used in strong motivational messages tailored to respective audiences. This training workshop will equip participants with the basics of leadership and motivation, how they can authentically tap into that motivation within themselves and use it so that others will be more inspired to follow them.

Prof. Dr. Tilman Eckloff is Professor of Business Psychology at Business School Berlin and managing partner at re|spic|ere. He consults clients of all industries on how to improve interhuman understanding and collaboration in organizations. He is also founder and former head of the interdisciplinary RespectResearchGroup.

5.3 Scrum, Kanban & Co.

Agile project management, especially Scrum and Kanban are widely discussed, sometimes portrayed as a secret weapon, sometimes as a threat for well functioning structures. In this workshop we will get an overview on agile project management. We will discuss when it makes sense to use it and how introducing these methods will change the whole organization. You will familiarize yourself with techniques that can be easily integrated in individual working processes.

Dr. Bettina Fackelmann, owner of „Solutions through Constructive Communication“, works with individuals and teams to create lasting solutions by communication. Of the 20 years of experience in inter/national project management (IT, design, science), she has been using agile approaches in leading roles for the last 10 years. Organizations she worked for comprise Accenture, MetaDesign, GIZ and public entities in Germany and the MENA region.

5.4 Facilitating Teams

Multi-stakeholder meetings need to be goal-oriented and time-efficient. On the other hand it is the culture and dynamics of these meetings that will greatly determine their impact. This workshop will provide you with both: the basics for designing and moderating meetings or workshops for diverse participants as well as communications techniques that create a productive climate and spark people’s potential.

Nils Cornelissen is co-founder of „RETURN ON MEANING“, a boutique management consultancy that supports organizations in their talent, leadership and change management. Prior to that Nils worked 10 years for McKinsey & Company. His drive stems from his long research into what motivates people professionally and how people can change. He is a certified coach (i.e. NLP, constellation work, MBTI) and has published various articles on his topics.
Imke Wangerin is founder of „KONGRUENZ “ („Congruency“)  and supports companies and individuals as a certified coach and intercultural trainer. Her background is in ethnology and cultural studies. In this field she puplished a book on intercultural hybridisation. Imke grew up in London and has lived and worked in six countries. She has given workshops for very different people and in very different places around the world.

 

The program is complemented by a unique Berlin boat trip experience, a fire place chat with a special guest and many additional networking opportunities throughout the week.

How to participate

Participation Fee

The participation fee is € 1.500 per person and includes lunch, dinner and drinks. LEAD offers a limited number of partial and full scholarships for participants from non-profit and public sector organizations. Travel and lodging are not included. Participants are free to organize their own hotel reservations, but we recommend to stay at the conference venue. Costs per night are about 100€. For those wanting to save costs, we can match you for double occupancy.

In order to participate in the program you need to submit your application through our form. You will have to indicate your preferred trainings for each day to define your individual learning journey. Please note that we will do our best to find the best match for you. However, if there is too much in demand we may give you your second preferred training.

Selection Process

The deadline for applications for the LEAD Summer School 2017 is 6:00 pm GMT on Sunday, May 21st, 2017. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, so the earlier you apply the higher your chances of admission to the program. You will hear back from us by end of May at the latest.
